Google Business Profile: how to get found locally in Venice and Padua
What the Google business profile is, how to set it up well, manage photos and reviews and link it to your site to get found on Maps in Venice and Padua.

People searching for “restaurant near me”, “hotel in Chioggia” or “accountant in Padua” often never reach a website: they choose straight from the map Google shows at the top of the results. Those listings are business profiles (Google Business Profile). They are free and, for anyone working with local customers, they are worth as much as a shop window on the street.
What it is and why it matters
The profile gathers everything people need to choose you in a single box: name, opening hours, address or the area you cover, phone, website, photos and reviews. It appears on Google Maps and in searches with a local intent, on phones too, right when someone is deciding where to go or whom to call.
Having one is not enough: among ten similar businesses, Google tends to show the ones with complete, up-to-date information backed by reviews.
Set it up well from the start
- Your business’s real name, the one on your sign. Adding keywords (“Da Mario Restaurant fresh fish Venice”) breaks Google’s rules and can get the profile suspended.
- The right primary category. It carries the most weight: “Venetian restaurant” says much more than “Restaurant”. Secondary categories complete the picture.
- Address or service area. If customers come to you, show the address; if you go to them, you can hide it and list the areas you cover.
- Complete opening hours, including holidays and seasonal closures. A customer who finds a place closed when it was marked open rarely comes back.
- Useful links: your website and, when relevant, your booking page or menu.
- Description and services, written in the words your customers use, not in trade jargon.
To activate it, Google asks you to verify that the business really exists, usually with a short video or another method it suggests. Until the profile is verified, it does not show up as it should.
Photos: real and up to date
Photos are often the first thing people look at. A few real ones beat many generic ones: the entrance, so visitors recognise you; the interior; your dishes, products or finished work; the people on your team. Update them when something changes, and now and then just to show the season.
Reviews: ask, reply, never buy
- Ask satisfied customers, at the right moment: after a good dinner, when you hand over a job. From the profile you can copy a direct link to send by message or print on a card.
- Reply to all of them, negative ones included, calmly and to the point: readers look at how you reply almost as much as at the rating.
- Do not buy them or offer discounts in exchange. Google’s rules forbid it, and fake or incentivised reviews can be removed along with your credibility.
Updates: a living profile
From the profile you can publish short updates: an event, the new seasonal menu, special opening hours, a project just completed. They are not needed every day; regular ones are enough to show visitors (and Google) that the business is active.
Link it to your website
Profile and website work best together. The profile gets you found, the website persuades: it explains your services, answers doubts and collects bookings and enquiries. Three tips:
- The same details everywhere: name, address or area, opening hours and contacts identical on the profile, the website and any online directories.
- A page on your site for your area, as we do with ours for Venice and Padua: it helps Google connect the business to the place.
- Measure the results. The profile’s “Performance” section shows how many people found you, called you, asked for directions or visited your site.
The most common mistakes
- Duplicate profiles, left over from old listings never closed.
- Opening hours not updated after a change or on holidays.
- A name stuffed with keywords.
- Reviews left unanswered for months.
- Old photos, or ones taken in the dark.
The profile is free and you can manage it yourself.
